    Diamond electro-optomechanical resonators integrated in nanophotonic circuits

    Diamond integrated photonic devices are promising candidates for emerging applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. Here we demonstrate active modulation of diamond nanophotonic circuits by exploiting mechanical degrees of freedom in free-standing diamond electro-optomechanical resonators. We obtain high quality factors up to 9600, allowing us to read out the driven nanomechanical response with integrated optical interferometers with high sensitivity. We are able to excite higher order mechanical modes up to 115 MHz and observe the nanomechanical response also under ambient conditions.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Accelerated Pulsed High-Fluence Corneal Cross-Linking for Progressive Keratoconus

    PURPOSE: To report on 2-year results of accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in progressive ectasia using the Avedro KXL system. DESIGN: Prospective interventional case series. METHODS: A total of 870 patients (1,192 eyes) attending Moorfields Eye Hospital after CXL were included. All patients undergoing CXL had progressive keratoconus. Corneas with a minimum stromal thickness <375 μm were excluded. Riboflavin 0.1% soak duration was 10 minutes. High-fluence pulsed UVA was delivered at 30 mW/cm2 for 4 minutes, with a 1.5-second on/off cycle (total energy 7.2 J/cm2). Subjective refractive, corneal tomography, and specular microscopy were performed at baseline, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively. The primary outcome measure was a change in maximum keratometry (Kmax) at 24 months. RESULTS: Twelve- and 24-month follow-up data were available on 543 and 213 patients, respectively (mean age 25.4 ± 6.6 years). In mild cones (Kmax < 55 diopter [D]), mean keratometry remained unchanged at 24 months. In more advanced disease, we observed modest corneal flattening compared to baseline (Kmax 63.2 ± 6.5 D vs 61.9 ± 8.1 D, P = .02), but no significant changes in central keratometry (K1 or K2). Keratometric stabilization was confirmed in 98.3% of eyes. Mean CDVA, manifest refraction and endothelial cell density did not change. Overall, 2.7% of eyes lost more than 2 lines of CDVA. CONCLUSION: Accelerated pulsed CXL is a safe, effective, and refractively neutral intervention (at 2 years) to halt disease progression in keratoconus

    Teaching sustainability within the context of everyday life: steps toward achieving the sustainable development goals through the EUSTEPs module

    In a world characterized by Ecological Overshoot, education can nurture sustainability-minded citizens and future leaders to help accelerate the transition towards a one-planet compatible society. Despite the essential role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in contributing to a sustainable society, a holistic understanding of how to incorporate sustainability initiatives into HEIs is still lacking. Given the importance of HEIs in societies and considering the number of students, educators, and staff they host every day, ensuring that sustainability is both taught and practiced within campuses becomes fundamental. To this end, a strategic partnership was created in 2019 to set up the ERASMUS+ project EUSTEPs - Enhancing Universities’ Sustainability Teaching and Practices through Ecological Footprint. Among the main outputs of the project is a teaching module for introducing the sustainability concept to students. This module takes a 360-degree approach to teach sustainability, allowing students to endogenously realize the full complexity of sustainability, in an engaging and captivating manner. This paper thus aims to: 1) present the EUSTEPs Module, its pedagogical approach and structure, and the learning outcomes and competencies students are expected to gain; 2) review the outcomes of its first pilot teaching in four European HEIs, and 3) shed light on how this Module contributes to the development of competences and pedagogical approaches for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our findings show that 90% of the students were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the Module, rating the Ecological Footprint as the most useful teaching tool among those included in the Module, and appreciated the interactive nature of the proposed teaching. Feedback obtained from students during the pilot teaching contributed to shaping the Module’s final structure and content.     Psychophysiology in games

    Psychophysiology is the study of the relationship between psychology and its physiological manifestations. That relationship is of particular importance for both game design and ultimately gameplaying. Players’ psychophysiology offers a gateway towards a better understanding of playing behavior and experience. That knowledge can, in turn, be beneficial for the player as it allows designers to make better games for them; either explicitly by altering the game during play or implicitly during the game design process. This chapter argues for the importance of physiology for the investigation of player affect in games, reviews the current state of the art in sensor technology and outlines the key phases for the application of psychophysiology in games.The work is supported, in part, by the EU-funded FP7 ICT iLearnRWproject (project no: 318803).peer-reviewe

    A Fusarium solani endophyte vs fungicides: Compatibility in a Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. radicis-lycopersici – tomato pathosystem

    The potential of FsK, a non-pathogenic endophytic Fusarium solani strain, to be utilized as a biocontrol agent in combination with nine selected fungicides registered in tomato crops in Greece was evaluated. In vitro fungitoxicity tests revealed that FsK was insensitive to doses exceeding 100 μg/mL of thiophanate-methyl, fenhexamid, cyprodinil, boscalid and mancozeb. On the contrary, prochloraz, fludioxonil, pyraclostrobin and difenoconazole were most toxic to FsK. None of the later fungicides affected conidial production in an adverse way. Drenching of tomato plants with the above fungicides at recommended doses did not significantly affect colonization of tomato roots by FsK as revealed by in vitro isolation and Real Time PCR quantification. The disease suppressive ability of FsK against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.radicis lycopersici (FORL) was not adversely affected by the post-inoculation application of commercial formulations of fludioxonil (Switch) and pyraclostrobin (Comet) at the recommended doses. Even more, the Comet–FsK combination resulted in enhanced disease suppression compared to either of the two treatments applied individually. In conclusion, not only biocontrol agent FsK is suitable for use in tomato integrated disease management programs that include all tested fungicides but also, some FsK –fungicide combinations can have additive effect against FORL disease incidence. © 2018 British Mycological Societ

    Metal nanoparticles: Phytotoxicity on tomato and effect on symbiosis with the Fusarium solani FsK strain

    The effect of copper (Cu-NPs, CuO-NPs), silver (Ag-NPs) and zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs) nanoparticles (NPs) on plant growth, physiological properties of tomato plants and their symbiotic relationships with the endophytic Fusarium solani FsK strain was investigated. Fungitoxicity tests revealed that the FsK strain was significantly more sensitive to Cu-NPs and ZnO-NPs than CuO-NPs and Ag-NPs both in terms of mycelial growth and spore germination. All NPs were more toxic to FsK compared to their bulk counterparts except for AgNO3, which was 8 to 9-fold more toxic than Ag-NPs. Apart from AgNO3, NPs and bulk counterparts did not affect the number of germinated tomato seeds even in higher concentrations, while root length was significantly reduced in a dose dependent way in most cases. Dry weight of tomato plants was also significantly reduced upon treatment with NPs and counterparts with most pronounced effects in the cases of AgNO3, Cu-NPs, ZnO-NPs, and ZnSO4. Root and shoot length of grown tomato plants was also affected by treatments while differences between NPs and bulk counterparts varied. A marked oxidative stress response was recorded in all cases of NPs/bulk counterparts as indicated by increased MDA and H2O2 levels of treated plants. Treated plants had significantly reduced chlorophyl-a and carotenoid levels compared to the untreated control. NPs and counterparts did not affect FsK colonization of roots indicating a possible shielding effect of tomato plants once the endophyte was established inside the roots. Vice versa, a possible alleviation of CuO-NPs, ZnO-NPs, and ZnSO4 toxicity was observed in the presence of FsK inside tomato roots in terms of plant dry weight. The results suggest that phytotoxicity of NPs in tomato treated plants should be considered before application and while both FsK and tomato are sensitive to NPs, their reciprocal benefits may extent to resistance towards these toxic agents. © 2021 Elsevier B.V

    Lung Cancer Clinical Trials with a Seamless Phase II/III Design: Systematic Review

    Current lung cancer clinical research focuses on biomarkers and personalized treatment strategies. Adaptive clinical trial designs have gained significant ground due to their increased flexibility, compared to the conventional model of drug development from phase I to phase IV trials. One such adaptive approach is the seamless phase II/III design, which has been used to reduce the total sample size and drug development time. In this context, an algorithmic systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE (PUBMED), SCOPUS, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials until 31 June 2022 in order to identify lung cancer trials of systematic treatments that have employed the seamless phase II/III methodology and to describe their characteristics. The search strategy yielded a total of 1420 records that were screened through their title and abstract; 28 eligible trials were included in the systematic review. Based on the study endpoints, the most common subtype included phase II/III trials with inefficacy/futility analyses (61%; 17/28), followed by dose escalation phase II/III trials (18%; 5/28), one multi-arm multi stage trial and 5 trials with other design (18%). Most eligible trials were open-label (71%; 20/27), included patients with non-small cell lung cancer (82%; 23/28), evaluated targeted therapies and/or immunotherapies (82%; 23/28) and recruited patients with advanced disease (89.3%; 25/28). In conclusion, the seamless phase II/III design is a feasible and suitable approach in lung cancer research, with distinct design subcategories according to study endpoints

    The reproductive cycle of Norway lobster

    The reproductive biology of female Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus was studied throughout an annual cycle from January to December 2007 in Pagasitikos Gulf, a large semi-enclosed Gulf in the central west Aegean Sea, in Greece. Six ovarian maturation stages were described to follow gonadal development, based on the combined external observation and histological examination of the ovary. Reproduction showed clear seasonality both in terms of ovarian maturation and brooding period. The proportion of fully mature females in the catch increased from January to the summer months with a peak in June. The species has a protracted brooding period that peaks in November and December, while the release of eggs from females' pleopods occurs from January to March. The size at which 50% of females reached sexual maturity was estimated, using a logistic model, to be 28.1 mm of carapace length. The undiscovered reproductive dynamics will be valuable for optimizing population models and management strategies for this important fishery resource
